A good friend from my youth - his father had escaped from East Germany.

One day I asked him "Mr. Graf, how did you get out of East Germany?", expecting some amazing story of sneaking past a wall, or a border patrol, a bunch of guards, etc.

His answer?

"One day I decided I didn't like it there anymore, so I got on a train and left"

This WAS during the cold war, but perhaps before it was all truly locked down?
